About POWA Electrical

Paul Hutchinson, Principal of POWA Electrical, brings over 30 years of experience in the electrical industry, having worked across various sectors in multiple roles.

In addition to his extensive electrical background, he also served for five years as a paramedic in the Emergency Services, further broadening his expertise in safety and crisis response.

Paul’s Story.

Paul began his career by completing an electrical apprenticeship as an Electrical Fitter, specialising in the repair and rewinding of electric motors. His work included pump and generator repairs, laying the foundation for what is now his strong technical knowledge.

He then moved into industrial refrigeration, where he was responsible for maintenance, fault-finding, and installing electrical systems for large refrigeration plants in a milk factory. His expertise extended to the installation of cool rooms and freezer rooms, ensuring precise temperature control for perishable goods.

Following this, Paul gained experience in domestic electrical work, wiring new homes, extensions, and sheds while also handling repairs and maintenance. His work included kitchen wiring, safety switch installations, smoke alarms, sensor security lighting, switchboard and mains upgrades, and lighting enhancements.

Expanding his expertise into commercial electrical work, Paul took on shop maintenance, including lighting and emergency lighting testing, repairs, and complete shop fit-outs. His industrial experience also included wiring mechanical workshops and machinery, as well as installing and maintaining lighting in new industrial sheds.

His career then led him into the commercial catering sector, where he worked with cafés, restaurants, food production businesses, and takeaway shops. He specialized in repairing electrical equipment such as ovens, mixers, bain-maries, and coffee machines while also handling complete electrical fit-outs for these establishments.

Paul later moved into the air conditioning sector, securing a major government contract involving the installation and maintenance of large AC plants, split systems, evaporative cooling units, wall-mounted AC units, and ventilation systems. As part of this role, he provided breakdown services to ensure critical systems remained operational.

His expertise expanded further into domestic appliance repair, working for an appliance repair service where he maintained and fixed household appliances such as washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, and hotplates.

Seeking a new challenge, Paul transitioned into the Emergency Services, training and serving as a paramedic for five years. This role involved delivering pre-hospital care to the community, reinforcing his commitment to safety and emergency response.

Returning to the electrical industry, he took on a regulatory role as an Electrical Safety Inspector, ensuring compliance with the Electrical Safety Act 2002. In this capacity, he investigated electrical incidents and shocks, collaborated with industry stakeholders, conducted business audits, tested electrical installations, and led safety initiatives. He also played an active role in educating the community and delivering seminars on current electrical issues.

With this wealth of experience, Paul now leads POWA Electrical, combining technical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and a strong commitment to electrical safety to deliver high-quality services across the industry.
